Tailored Surgical Plan for Asian Breast Augmentation

Although Asian women come in all shapes and sizes, they have certain common ethnic characteristics that make a carefully tailored surgical plan necessary before a breast augmentation procedure is performed. Dr. David Kahng at Cara Plastic Surgery & Laser Center has the training, experience, and exquisite surgical technique to produce beautiful, natural-looking results with Asian breast augmentation Los Angeles patients.

How Is Asian Breast Augmentation Different?

These implants consist of a silicone shell filled with sterile saline solution. Saline implants can be filled after they are placed in the body to allow for minor modifications in size after placement and smaller surgical incisions.

Implant Position

There are advantages and disadvantages to placing breast implants above or below the chest muscle. Most Asian patients do not have enough breast tissue. Due to this difference in anatomy from non-Asian patients, the implant is placed under the muscle to achieve a natural upper pole shape and contour. Dr. Kahng uses a dual-plane technique when placing the implant under the muscle.

Implant Type

Most Asian women have petite frames and small native breast tissue. Saline implants can be used but are not ideal. Cohesive/gummy bear silicone gel breast implants are recommended by Dr. Kahng to achieve a natural shape and feel. Asian patients can choose either moderate profile or high profile implants based on individual anatomy but Dr. Kahng will customize the breast surgery accordingly to each individual patient during the consultation.

Implant Size

Asian women tend to be shorter and more petite than Western women. Most Asian women have a narrow rib cage and a narrow chest. This limits the size of implant you can choose and still have a natural look, and achieve balanced proportions.

A drastic increase in cup size could make the breast disproportionally large in comparison to the rest of the body. Dr. Kahng will measure your chest width carefully to determine which breast implants will best fit your body, and bring about the most attractive result.

Asian Breast Augmentation Incision Placement

Many Asian women have fine, delicate skin and a tendency to develop scars that are raised or pigmented. This can affect the choice of where an incision is made for implant placement.

Options for incision placement are: in the crease of the armpit, around the areola (where the darker pigment helps hide the scar); and in the breast fold crease (where the incision is hidden underneath the breast).

In Asian breast augmentation procedures, Dr. Kahng closes incisions with the greatest care to minimize the risk of visible scarring.

Though these differences may seem minor, subtle ethnic differences can have significant implications in cosmetic surgery. Dr. Kahng’s specialized approach to Asian breast augmentation in Los Angeles and Orange County produces beautiful, shapely breasts in proportion and harmony with a petite Asian body.

Asian Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation surgery is performed in the same way for Asian women as for women of any ethnicity. After anesthesia is administered, the surgeon:

  • Makes an incision;
  • Lifts the breast tissue;
  • Creates a pocket for the implant;
  • Places the implant in the pocket; and
  • Closes the incision with sutures.

The implants are placed either under the pectoral muscles or over the pectoral muscles and under the breast tissue.

Several factors will determine where the implant is placed in relation to the muscle, including:

  • Your anatomy;
  • The type of implant; and
  • The size of the implant.

Dr. Kahng uses the “No Touch” technique with the Keller Funnel when the implant is delivered into the pocket, avoiding the breast implant from ever touching the skin. Dr. Kahng also utilizes triple antibiotic saline irrigation and not betadine when irrigating the pocket. These techniques limit the risk of capsular contracture.
